Boarding School (in Kennel) Training

We recommend owner and dog take classes... after all, both ends of the leash have to know what to do!  However, if you live too far from us to attend group classes, need special training not offered in the group class, or simply want a professional touch to your dog’s behavior, consider In-Kennel training.  We will board and train your dog here.  We can offer lots of distractions, as well as concentrated, one on one lessons with your dog(s). This can cover anything from simple obedience to more complex training.  Most dogs will benefit from a period no longer than two weeks for things like basic obedience, problem solving, or “manners”.  Longer periods will be required for more advanced training for skills like drug detection, tracking, or police certification.

In-kennel training, for any of the skills mentioned above is $575 per week for first skill plus boarding fee of $25 per night, for a total of $750 per week.  Additional costs for more complex training will be determined by evaluation.  Please call 989.224.7225 to discuss our boarding school training for your dog.
 
Private Lessons for you and your dog
Dog Obedience Training at Cher Car Kennels
Are you having problems with just a few behaviors?  Don’t have time to take a complete 6 week class?  Maybe a private lesson with one of our trainers is what you need!  

Lessons are given 11 AM. to 7 P.M. weekdays by appointment only.  Each lesson will run approximately an hour.  Jumping, walking on leash, coming when called, and other behaviors can be addressed.  

Most times, we will be training indoors, in our training arena.  Wear outdoor clothing, good shoes.  The arena has a dirt floor.  If the weather allows, we may also be traiing in outdoor areas.

Dog Obedience Training at Cher Car Kennels
 
Group Obedience Classes

Group Classes are available year round at Cher Car Kennels.  First (beginner class) covers the basic commands of “heel”, “come”, “sit”, “down” and “stay”.  We also cover basic behaviors and how to correct them, like jumping up, bolting out doors, stealing food, and so on.  Our group classes are very popular, and have had repeat clients for years!  We don’t bore you or your dog to tears... lots of activity, lots of distractions, and instruction tailored to your needs ensure both you and your dog will enjoy your class!

 

Typical dogs will need a chain slip collar (measuring only 2" larger than your dog's neck), a six foot leash (nylon or leather only) and be up to date on shots.  All ages are welcome, but dogs younger than 6 months old will have to have a prior evaluation. Evaluations available for all dogs, and for all types of behavior problems. 

 

Classes run for one hour, once a week, for six weeks. Cost $200.

Protection Classes

Cher Car Kennels has been offering canine personal protection training for the family pet since 1977, which teaches your dog to be a social yet skilled bodyguard capable of protecting the kids and your household.  (Read more here about "Understanding Canine Protection Training" and learn the answer to "What is a Protection Dog?").  Our Protection classes are always offered directly following an obedience class.  Instructor approval is necessary.  Dogs must be at LEAST 10 months old and have completed one obedience class prior to signing up for a protection class.  Most dogs will need a stout flat collar, a correction collar, and a strong leather lead.  Some dogs may require additional equipment.  Classes meet for one hour each week, for a period of six weeks.  Cost is $400.

Service Dog Training
Cher Car Kennels has been training assistance dogs for over 30 years.  We offer specialized custom training for the unique needs of each individual owner, whether it be mobility, alert, emotional or physical assistance.  We can locate the right dog for your needs, with the dog's temperament and drives being correct for the services to be performed. 
 
Costs for this complex training will be determined after evaluation.  References are gladly given.  Call or email for more details!

Agility Classes

Agility classes are for those folks wishing to compete in agility, or for people who just want to do something different with their dog.  This is a structured, teaching class and dogs must pass an evaluation before entering agility class.  Handlers should be able to move freely about, and be able to control their dog (come, stay, here) before entering this class. Classes meet once a week, for six weeks. Cost $200.00

NOSEWORK CLASSES

Dogs are born with a nose for odors.  The dog's amazing sense of smell has been used for centuries to assist in finding lost objects, people, hunt game, locate narcotics and explosives, root out critters in the barn and now detect blood and chemical level changes in their owners warning of oncoming medical emergencies.

Nosework sports showcasing the dog's amazing sense of smell and their natural desire to hunt have recently been developed.  This class will teach the foundation for earning competitive nosework titles from United Kennel Club Nosework events.  Instructor Cheryl Carlson is a UKC Nosework judge whose personal students have accumulated over 1,00 nosework titles since the sport's inception in 2014.

Dogs enrolled in this class will need a 6 foot leash, a normal training collar (slip collar) AND an additional nylon buckle collar that makes an audible "clicking" noise when the ends are fastened together around the dog's neck. Classes run for one hour, once a week, for six weeks. Cost is $200.00

Earning the UKC Elite Nosework title is not an easy task. It takes perseverance, dedication and patience. To earn the EN title, a dog and handler pass a pre-test for each of the 5 scents (birch, anise, clove, myrrh and vetiver), then must earn 2 legs in 4 separate elements (container, interior, exterior and vehicle) in EACH of the 5 scents. The higher the level, the greater the number of hides which must be found (1-4 odor hides) and multiple distractions (1-3 distractions of food or toys) must be ignored. This requires a minimum of 45 shows to earn 30 title certificates as follows:

Dock Jumping Lessons at Cher Car Kennels

Dock Jumping

Dock jumping is a performance sport where dogs jump off a dock into a pool during events hosted by Ultimate Air Dogs.  Jumping lessons offered in the categories of Big Air (distance), Catch-It (catching a toy or bumper in air during the distance jump) and Fetch-It (taking down a bumper suspended 4 feet over the water at a distance of 12’ to 30’ away from the dock.  

Students should bring a buckle collar and cotton or nylon leash plus a floatable toy.  Wear clothing that you won’t mind getting wet.  Come prepared to get in the pool if your dog needs to learn to swim. (A changing room is available to go from street clothes to swim suit).

This is Deb Hebeler and her Belgian Malinois "Torrent" celebrating their new “personal best” jump distance on 7/1/18. Deb writes: “This boy gave it his ALL today at the UAD regional qualifier finals at Cher Car Kennels. My hand is where he landed. 29 ft 4 in. putting him in first place in the Ultimate division. He's my champ. What a ride we are having....I'm hanging on for dear life! Thanks to Kelly Reed Lucas for the photo!”

Conformation Classes

Dogs will not be judged as to their conformation, however, tips will be given to help show the dog to his/her best advantage.  Junior handlers would also benefit from this class.  Typical handling of both AKC and UKC rings, including proper use of bait, lead, and footwork.  Classes will not be divided as to age/sex.  Classes run for one hour, once a week, for six weeks.  Cost $200.00

Tracking/Trailing Classes

Limited to 4 dog/handler teams per class.  Tracking/trailing classes emphasis proper use of terrain, wind direction/speed, humidity, and other factors.  Food is usually used to start.  Ball or retrieve item used at the discretion of the instructor.  Classes will not be divided, however, proper titling techniques (T.D., T.D.X., V.S.T) will be discussed .  Police style tracking can also be taught.  Most rewards approved, live finds and items.  Classes run approx 2 hours, once a week for periods of six, eight or ten weeks.  Cost varies according to length.  Six week class is $450.00

Drug or Explosives or other target Odor Detection

Dog must pass an evaluation, both in drives and temperaments.  Detection work is not limited to Police applications only.  Dog and handler team must work until they pass a certification process.  Prices vary, according to the drives/abilities of the dog/handler.  Most dogs do well in a ten week course.  Private lessons, of not more than three dogs at one session.  Typically, ten sessions done once a week, at the owners convenience.  Cost $750.00 for first ten sessions. 


 
Police K-9

Cher Car Kennels has been training police service K-9s for over 40 years.  We specialize in training police dogs from the ground up.  We will locate the right dog for your department, with the dogs’ drives being correct for his ultimate usage.  Small department?  No problem.  We will custom train the dog to fit into the handlers’ life style, so that the addition of the dog will not cause any bad bites, or misusage.  Our method takes a little longer, but we feel confident that once you have dealt with us, you will see what an advantage this custom training is.  We can train a dual purpose dog (patrol and detection) or single purpose dog (for example, just a drug dog, or just a tracking dog).

Equipment required on the first night of class is a 6 foot leash (preferably leather) and a chain slip collar (that measures ONLY 2 inches larger than your dog's neck) to class. If attending a protection class, a sturdy 1.5" or 2" wide buckle collar will also be required.
